Man...anytime I walk into Taffy’s and there’s a drum set and electric guitars I’m a happy camper. Okay, I dig the acoustic sets and the singer songwriter guys and gals but when a band plays Taffy’s it’s super cool to me.  “Alone @ 3AM” hails from the Gem City and plays many of the popular Cincinnati venues.  It was a totally different vibe in Taffy’s tonight with upbeat rocking as the band cruised through an assortment of original tunes.  A self-described rock band (with a very slight country feel) reminded several listeners of “The Wallflowers”.  Typically, the members of Alone @ 3AM are  Joey on bass, Tim on drums, Max on guitar and vocals, Clay on guitar and Sarah on keyboards and backing vocals.   However tonight for Taffy’s the band was a “stripped down” coffee shop version consisting of  just Sarah, Max and Tim.  However, they still rocked the house! To be fair,  for the traditional Taffy’s goer, the  “Alone @ 3 AM” performance might have been a shock as the volume was much higher than the typical acoustic performance.  However the volume didn’t detract from the fact that this is a very talented band with enthusiastic members.   The band is currently pushing it’s newest compact disc, “City Out Of Luck” packed with original tunes.  A cool album by a very good local band! It’s a rare occasion when someone plays a 12-string guitar in Eaton’s home of live music.  The 12-string however, is a perfect vehicle for supporting the strong vocal compositions performed by Gene Webb and Margie Stoller.  Performing an impressive array of smooth folk tunes and creative covers, the due admirably performs originals and well done covers by the likes of the Beatles, Roger McGuinn, Townes Van Zant and others.    Webb’s guitar style can be described as understated; he’s not trying to draw any attention to himself or demonstrate any flash or glitz, it’s clearly all about the song for this duo.  His playing is smooth, controlled and technically very proficient.  The guys got good guitar chops.  Vocally Gene’s voice is also a perfect companion to the soaring, inspirational range of his companion Margie Stoller, whos clear enthusiasm for singing along with Gene is matched only by her captivating smile.  One only needs to listen to realize the exceptional emotion and feeling she puts into her songs to know she digs what she’s doing.  In a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” Margie’s voice is captivating and filled with upbeat feeling of happiness and joy that enhances the overall positive mix of the song.  Vocally this duo is talented and they harmonize well, putting thier all into entertaining their audience.  A Taffy’s favorite, if you’re into acoustic music with a folk-country-classic spin you’ll enjoy the talent  Gene and Margie bring to the Taffy’s stage.
